Our network

Established in 2009, Ripplecom was founded on the belief that every business and home, independent of location, should be able to access connectivity that enables them to live and work.

The company was created from the merger of two regional Wireless Internet Service Providers: Amocom Technologies Limited and Callidus Telecom (Europe) Limited. Backed by investment from Farmer Business Developments plc, two further acquisitions- of ICE Broadband and Last Mile Limited- quickly followed. This consolidation conferred a significant market share, of both the wireless infrastructure and customer base of rural Ireland, on Ripplecom.

Licensed as a telecommunications operator by ComReg, with a portfolio of Connectivity, Business Continuity, Voice, and Security products, Ripplecom is increasingly focused on business communications. Adding fibre expertise and partnerships to our fixed wireless radio network has given us unrivalled ability to deliver connectivity in both rural and urban environments.

Network evolution

Ongoing infrastructural investments mean that, Ripplecom operates Ireland’s largest independent fixed wireless network with a core network capacity of up to 100,000 customers. Carefully developed by our Senior Engineers, Ripplecom’s network is characterised by its extensive reach, resilience and flexible access technologies.

Coverage and reach

Ripplecom currently operates a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network of over 300 sites offering point-to-point (PtP) and point-to-multipoint (PtMP) transmission sites. Generally, these sites are what allow Ripplecom to reach far into outlying areas. Each transmission site consists of one or more FWA sectors, operating across a mixture of licensed and license-exempt frequency bands to connect customers across 25 counties nationally.

Designed for resilience

Traffic from Ripplecom’s fixed wireless network is backhauled over licensed microwave and dedicated fibre links to multiple Tier 4 data centre facilities. With the aim of having zero outages at the core level, our network configuration has been carefully designed to ensure resilience at both hardware and routing level, to increase service diversity in the event of an issue with power or the underlying physical network. Meanwhile, all fibre backhaul circuits are built on protected ring infrastructure and are protected by 24/7 Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

There are many ways a business can connect to the Internet. As Ripplecom does not simply operate across our own independent network but also partners with a range of fibre and LTE carriers, we have full visibility of Ireland’s connectivity infrastructure. We consider all available options before recommending the solution that will deliver the maximum reach, value and reliability for our customers.

Fixed wireless

Fixed wireless access is a type of broadband connectivity that relies on microwave signals between an internet service provider’s (ISP) transmitting mast and a receiver antenna located on the customer’s premises.

Ripplecom has a decade of experience in delivering dedicated and contended connectivity across our fixed wireless network. We source the best radio hardware from across the globe, configured by our engineers to create connections with capacity ranging from 10Mb to 10Gb.

Wireless connectivity is a genuine and cost-effective alternative to fibre as a primary connection, as a complementary high capacity secondary link for business continuity or as a last mile extension of the fibre network.

In radio connectivity, the terms licensed and near-licensed refer to spectrum. Radios transmit information (including data) at different frequencies over the air. Frequencies are grouped into frequency bands. Together, the full range of frequencies is known as the spectrum. In Ireland, certain frequencies are controlled by ComReg, the Commission for Communications Regulation. A license must be obtained from ComReg to broadcast on these frequencies. However, it is possible to broadcast on the other frequencies with no requirement for a license. The advantages of licensed and near licensed frequencies for your business are briefly set out below.

Opting for a service delivered across a ComReg licensed radio means your business is protected from interference. This ensures the quality of the connection will not be affected or degraded by other radio signals in the area.

Near licensed radio connections operate at frequencies that do not require a license from ComReg. As such, opting for a radio that operates on these frequencies removes the cost of a license and results in shorter lead time to delivery. While there is no regulatory protection of unlicensed frequencies, Ripplecom engineers will only configure a near licensed radio when confident, following full spectrum analysis, that interference will not impact on service.


As a wholesale partner of open eir, enet, Viatel and ESB Telecoms, Ripplecom has unrivalled access to the country’s fibre infrastructure. Depending on location, the team will design a solution that takes full advantage of available fibre in the area.

FTTB and Fibre To The Home (FTTH) connections are created when fibre cables run directly from the exchange to the end user’s premises. Cables may run through underground ducts or drop from overhead poles such as existing telephone poles. Where available, these fibre optic connections offer impressive speeds and throughput. When a building is not already connected, Ripplecom’s business team can advise you of your options.
FTTC connections, also known as VDSL, operate across a combination of fibre and copper cables. Ripplecom can provide an FTTC connection where fibre runs as far as the local telephone exchange, or roadside cabinet. From there, copper telephone lines carry the connection a short distance to the business premises.

Ripplecom engineers incorporate LTE connectivity into overall network design to guarantee business continuity. Our standard Orion product is typically delivered using LTE as the secondary connection. The use of a completely diverse path- by air- helps businesses stay fully operational amid major outages.

To ensure coverage, we work with a number of LTE operators. At installation, our field technicians carry out tests to determine the best signal for the customer’s location.
